A K9-assisted inspection performed by a licensed pest control professional combines the experience of a trained inspector with the remarkable scent detection abilities of professionally trained dogs. While no inspection method is 100% accurate, this combination is considered one of the most effective ways to locate bed bugs. Our handlers apply years of pest management knowledge regarding bed bug biology and behavior, while our detection dogs search for odors that cannot be seen with the naked eye.
-
Our detection dogs are trained to recognize the unique scent profile produced by live bed bugs and viable bed bug eggs. Rather than detecting a single odor, they identify a complex combination of naturally occurring compounds, including proteins, pheromones, and other biological odors associated with an active infestation.
-
Green Dog's detection dogs are trained to alert only to the presence of live bed bugs and viable bed bug eggs.
They are not trained to alert on:
Dead bed bugs
Bed bug skins (cast exoskeletons)
Bed bug fecal staining
Other insects or household pests
Every canine alert is independently verified by the handler before findings are reported.
-
Research conducted by the University of Florida reported laboratory detection accuracy approaching 98% under controlled testing conditions. While real-world inspections present variables that cannot be duplicated in a laboratory, Green Dog believes its teams perform at or above those standards based on our rigorous in-house training and twice-annual double-blind testing program.
As with any inspection method, accuracy depends on several factors, including environmental conditions, accessibility of the search area, and the proximity of bed bugs to the areas being inspected.
-
Because of the biology and behavior of bed bugs, Green Dog cannot guarantee inspection results.
Bed bugs are exceptional hitchhikers and can be introduced into a property at any time. In addition, inspection results may be affected by conditions outside our control, including inaccessible areas, clutter, environmental contaminants, recent pesticide applications, or bed bugs located outside the search area.
Our commitment is to provide the most thorough and accurate inspection possible using professionally trained K9 teams, experienced licensed handlers, and industry-leading quality standards.

Every Green Dog K9 team successfully completes a random, double-blind performance evaluation annually under the supervision of an independent evaluator.
Our evaluation standards include:
Double-blind testing
Randomized search environments
Distractor odors
Zero tolerance for false alerts
Pinpoint accuracy within a two-foot radius of the hide
While many organizations rely on annual certification through national organizations, Green Dog has chosen to maintain an independent testing program with standards that we believe better reflect the level of performance our clients expect. Complete testing records are available upon request for customers and organizations requiring documentation during the bidding process.
